This project was inspired by exposure to a webcam which let me witness the Euromaidan protests taking place in Kiev during February 2012. After hours of being captivated by the images on screen, I decided to search for additional cameras which were streaming images from the protests.
The result is a work constructed from two elements. Firstly, a television camera which was focussed on the Maidan and gave the impression of the aftermath of a revolution. And secondly, an installation which invokes the buffering of a video stream and the architectural aspect given to the Maidan when it's framed in this way.
In the center of the Maidan stands a huge marble column crowned with a statue of the godess; Berehynia which was raised in place of a monumental fountain from the Soviet era. However, Berehynia is cut from the fame and only the pedestal remains.
Due of a technical glitch, the video runs for two seconds then freezes for eight seconds. The result of this is a strange choreography of small, dark figures who are briefly in movement, then frozen, then appearing to have jumped forward in their paths and endlessly repeating. In the installation, Berehynia appears in the sky each time the figures are in motion.
Today the cameras have gone dark.
פרוייקט זה נוצר בעקבות מפגש עם webcam בו ניתן היה לצפות באופן רציף במהפכה שהתרחשה בכיכר מיידן בקייב, אוקראינה, פברואר 2012. בעקבות שהייה ממושכת מול המסך וצפייה אינטנסיבית התחלתי ליצור קשר עם פעילים פוליטיים שהשתתפו במאבק ואלה שלחו לי קישורים נוספים למצלמות פתוחות שצופות על הכיכר לאחר תום ההתקוממות. התערוכה הייתה מורכבת משני איברים- הראשון, המצלמה הפתוחה שמעבירה בשידור ישיר פעילות וחזות פוסט- מהפכתית, והשני, מיצב המתייחס לבאפר בסטרימינג ולחיתוך הארכיטקטורה שהפריים עושה לכיכר. במרכז הכיכר ניצב אובליסק ענק ובכתרו ניצבת ״מלאכית החירות״ אשר החליפה לא מזמן מונומנט קומוניסטי, אך המלאכית חתוכה מהתמונה ונשאר רק האובליסק הגדוע. כמו כן, בגלל כשל טכני, הוידאו רץ למשך שתי שניות ונתקע לשמונה. התוצאה של כך היא כיאורוגרפיה של דמויות שחורות קטנות בתנועה למשך שתי שניות, קפואות במקום במשך שמונה שניות ואז קופצות קדימה במסלול הליכתן וחוזר חלילה. במיצב, המלאכית מופיעה בשמיים בכל פעם שהאנשים בכיכר בתנועה. כיום, המצלמה כבויה.
